Sept. 23, 1999
Dear Mr. Davids: On Sept. 18th, 1999, I had the distinct pleasure of viewing your film, STARRY NIGHT, at the Boston Film Festival. I am writing to commend you on an outstanding job in both production and direction. As an art historian and appraiser of fine art, I find this film to be well thought-out, researched and executed. One of my specialties as an art historian includes "The Life and Work of Vincent van Gogh." I have presented many lectures to various colleges and local organizations on this subject. While much of the film is historically accurate, you have, quite ingeniously, managed to delightfully mix fact with fantasy, and that is the formula of which good films are made. The fantasy that Vincent comes back to life to finish his work (i.e. calling) is an idea I have often pondered. Alas! The question, "How could Vincent have handled success?" was aptly addressed in your approach. I also wish to praise Abbott Alexander for his exemplary portrayal of Vincent van Gogh. I found his presentation to be refreshingly upbeat, yet in complete keeping with the character and nature of Vincent. Rather than an over-the-top play on the mythical image of Vincent as a "mad man," Mr. Alexander gave an intelligent, endearing, and believable performance. Just as Kirk Douglas IS Vincent van Gogh in LUST FOR LIFE, Abbott Alexander IS Vincent van Gogh in STARRY NIGHT. The entire cast gave complimentary performances and I loved the subtle humor of the greedy, yet in the end, good guy lawyer. Lisa Waltz gave a stellar performance as Vincent's love interest, again in a non-exaggerated manner. In closing, I wish to express my belief that this film, STARRY NIGHT, has great potential to become a major art-house and box office success. I am thrilled to have had the opportunity to view this film at its debut in Boston. I know you will enjoy the success you deserve. Sincerely, Donna Winant Appraiser |
